A Goal Without a Plan Is Only a Wish

Many people do not live up to their possibilities both in the private as well as in the professional sphere because they do not set themselves any targets in their lives. The lack of clearly defined goals inevitably prevents us from fully utilising our capacities and potential and, as a consequence, leads to the absence of success.
Three reasons why precise goals are so important:
If we have measurable targets in our sights
1. We are able to muster the motivation necessary to bring about positive changes in our lives.
2. We will not waste any time and energy with wrong methods of solution because we know what we want to achieve and can concentrate on this goal.
3. We have the possibility to ascertain whether we have reached our goal.
The condition for our personal success is an efficient cycle:
When a hidden wish turns into a tangible goal our motivation grows and prompts us to act. On our way to reaching this goal, control is a crucial factor in ensuring that we are steering in the right direction with the right strategy and in determining whether or when we will have reached our goal. If we want to be successful we must consciously initiate this cycle; otherwise we will remain in our position of standstill.
10 steps to successfully setting goals:
1. Write down your goals - Turn your dreams into tangible goals.
2. Analyse your goals - Are your goals from the different spheres reconcilable?
3. Define the details - Time, place, quality, figures etc.
4. Define the necessary short-term and long-term steps - Which strategies do you want to follow to reach this goal?
5. Think in the first person and in the present tense - Phrase the goal as if you already had reached it.
6. Bear in mind the emotional rewards - Imagine how you will feel when you have reached your goal. "How will it enrich my life?"
7. Some goals are nobody's business - Do not needlessly put yourself under pressure by telling everyone about your goal.
8. Some goals do concern others - It is important to involve those people that have a part in reaching the goal; otherwise you cannot work together.
9. Visualise your goal over and over again - Motivate yourself by repeatedly imagining visually the state you will have achieved - several times a day!
10. Review your goals every now and then - This way you can ensure that you really are concentrating on the things that are most important to you.
